Cranfield University (CU) is an exclusively postgraduate university that is a global leader for education and transformational research in technology and management, and one of Europe's largest academic centres for aerospace research, development and design. CU offers a unique environment for transformational research into the aerospace sector. As one of the few universities in the world with its own airport, CU is at the forefront of aerospace technology, working to address the challenges of digital aviation and rethink the airports, airlines, airspace management and aircraft of the future.

The School of Aerospace, Transport and Manufacturing (SATM) is one of the largest providers of engineering education, research and technology support to aerospace industry. The Aerospace Theme in SATM brings together a number of aerospace related centres of competences, including Aeronautics, Propulsion, Autonomous Systems, Intelligent Automation and Computational Methods. It has more than 200 doctoral students and 400 MSc Aerospace students drawn from universities around the world, making it the UK's top destination for aerospace engineering postgraduate students and the largest provider of accredited aerospace degree courses.

Project Overview:
This PhD project will be aligned with the ISOBAR (artificial Intelligence to forecaSt meteO-Based DCB imbAlances for netwoRk operations planning) project, funded by SESAR JU, under the EU H2020 programme, with a total budget of 2.6M Euros. The project consortium consists of 11 organisations, including CRIDA, Eurocontrol, French Civil Aviation Authority, UC3M, ENAC, Swiss Airline, Sopra Steria etc.

Entry Requirements:
Applicants should hold a Master Degree, preferably in Computer Science/Aerospace Engineering/Transport Engineering/Operation Research.  Self-motivated candidates with algorithm/software development experience and aviation background are encouraged to apply. Knowledge in air/unmanned traffic management are highly valued.

Funding:
This studentship will provide a bursary of up to £24,000 p.a. for 3 years, which will cover both the tuition fee and the maintenance bursary.

Research Group:
The PhD candidate will join the Air Traffic Management Laboratory based in the Aerospace Integration Research Centre. He/she will be supervised by Prof Francisco Javier Sáez Nieto and Dr Yan Xu.
