The Quantum Theory and Technology group (qtt.phys.soton.ac.uk) of Prof. Simone De Liberato performs both theoretical and experimental investigations in nanophotonics, solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics, and quantum technologies. We have presently two projects open to host CSC-funded PhD candidates in our facilities at the University of Southampton.
The Quantum Theory and Technology group explores how the coupling between light and matter at the quantum level can be exploited to modify optical, chemical, and structural properties of matter, opening a novel world of possibilities for the engineering of quantum functional materials [1]. Our results have both opened novel venues for the investigation of fundamental physical phenomena [2,3] and allowed for the design of a novel class of emitters which promise to revolutionise the optoelectronic market [4].
The University of Southampton hosts one of the leading photonics research institutes worldwide. Located just one hour away from Heathrow airport, it comprises state-of-the-art cleanrooms for optical fibre, planar photonics, silicon and bio-photonics fabrication and over 80 laboratories. The University of Southampton also hosts a huge and vibrant research community in theory and computer modelling which benefits from its high performance computing cluster Iridis, one of the largest supercomputers in the UK. In 2019 the University of Southampton’s School of Physics and Astronomy has been ranked as the 6th best physics department in the UK.
