bangor university was established in 1884 and currently has over 11,000 students. it comprises 14 academic schools grouped in to 3 colleges. the college of environmental sciences and engineering at bangor university is one of the leading centres in the uk for teaching and research in biology, environmental sciences, geography, ocean sciences, chemistry, computer science and electronic engineering. the university was awarded a gold rating in the recent uk teaching excellence framework.

the college has over 2300 students and 350 teaching and support staff, and consists of three academic schools and the biocomposites centre. the school of computer science and electronic engineering is a school within this college. the school achieved the uk’s fourth highest score for its electronic engineering research output in the recent research excellence framework (ref 2014), acknowledging the world leading research activity carried out in the school.these articulate in the fields of photonics (optoelectronics, optical system and communications), and material and devices (smart materials, organic and green electronics, device fabrication and characterization).
the project

the optical communications research group (ocrg) in the school of computer science and electronic engineering, bangor university, has established its world-wide reputation in research in optical access networks and digital signal processing (dsp). by making use of the ocrg’s dsp research capability, an innovative-minded dsp centre of excellence will be created in september 2019 in bangor university, by involving a number of globally leading industrial partners with a well-balanced and skill-complementary expertise. the dsp centre will develop cutting-edge dsp solutions for 5g and 5g ecosystems with a sharp focus on not only further improving the ocrg’s research capacity but also capturing more research grants from both public and private funding sources. the dsp centre will pursue the six following technically and logically-linked rd&i projects including: i) dsp algorithm design, optimisation and implementation; ii) flexible transceivers and networking devices; iii) optical and wireless transmission system convergence; iv) cloud network architectures; v) sdn-based network control; and vi) 5g testbed establishment and field trials. the scheme is part-funded by the european regional development fund (erdf) through the welsh government until 30th june 2023, eu funds: investing in wales. beyond the funding period, the centre’s long-term sustainability is envisaged to be maintained by capturing further research funding and commercialising the centre-generated dsp solutions.
