So how are you getting on with your teaching practice at the High School, Joe?

Well I've been put in charge of the school marching band, and it's quite a responsibility. I'd like to talk it over with you.
Go ahead. You'd better start by giving me a bit of background.
OK. Well the band has students in it from all years, so they're aged 11 to 18, and there are about 50 of them altogether. It's quite a popular activity within the school. I've never worked with a band of more than 20 before, and this is very different.
I can imagine.
They aren't really good enough to enter national band competitions, but they're in a regional one later in the term. Even if they don't win, and I don't expect them to, hopefully it'll be an incentive for them to try and improve.
Yes, hopefully.
Well, now the town council's organising a carnival in the summer, and the band has been asked to perform. If you ask me, they aren't really up to it yet, and I need to get them functioning better as a band, and in a very short time.
Have you been doing anything with them? Apart from practising the music, I mean.
I played a recording I came across, of a drummer talking about how playing in a band had changed his life. I think it was an after-dinner speech. I thought it was pretty inspiring, because being in the band had stopped him from getting involved in crime. The students seemed to find it interesting, too.
That's good.
I'm planning to show them that old film from the 1940s 'Strike Up the Band', and talk about it with the students. What do you think?
Good idea. As it's about a school band, it might make the students realise how much they can achieve if they work together.
That's what I've got in mind. I'm hoping I can take some of the band to a parade that's going to take place next month. A couple of marching bands will be performing, and the atmosphere should be quite exciting. It depends on whether I can persuade the school to hire a coach or two to take us there.
Mmm. They sound like good ideas to me.

他们还不够好到可以参加全国性的乐队比赛，但是他们本学期后面会参加一个地区性的比赛。即使他们不会赢，我也不期待他们能赢，但还是希望这能成为让他们不断尝试，进行提升的动力。

好的，现在市政厅正在组织夏季的狂欢节，邀请乐队去表演。如果让我说的话，他们还没有准备好，我需要在很短的时间内让他们作为一个乐队，运行的越来越好。
你和他们一起做过什么事情吗？我的意思是除了练习音乐之外。
有一次我给他们播放了我刚好看到的一段录音，是一个鼓手谈论玩乐队是如何改变他的生活的。应该是餐后致辞。我觉得真的非常振奋人心，因为在乐队里面让他摆脱了犯罪的深渊。学生看起来也都觉得很有趣。

我就是那么想的。我希望能够带乐队的一部分人去参加下个月的游行。很多游行的乐队都会表演，氛围会非常地激动人心。这取决于我能否说服学校包一两辆车把我们给送过去。

Journey to the West is one of the Four Great Classical Novels in China.Published first anonymously in the 1590s during the Ming Dynasty and even though there is no direct evidence of its authorship, it has been said that the author is Wu Cheng'en since the 20th century.The novel is about the legends of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang's pilgrimage to India during the Tang dynasty in order to obtain Buddhist scriptures.Instructed by the Buddha, the Bodhisattva Guanyin assigns this task to the monk and his three protectors in the form of disciples, namely Sunwukong, Zhubajie, Shawujing,together with a dragon prince who acts as Xuanzang's horse.These four characters have agreed to help Xuanzang go to the West as confession for their past sins.
