PhD Opportunities in Mechanics and Materials at the University of Birmingham (Yueting Sun Group in the School of Engineering)
Dr Yueting Sun received his Bachelor in Automotive Engineering and Bachelor in Economics from Tsinghua University in 2010, followed by a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2015. He visited the University of California, San Diego from 2013 to 2014, and held the KC Wong Fellowship at the University of Oxford from 2016 to 2018. He moved from Oxford to Birmingham in Dec 2019 and became a Lecturer in Engineering.
Dr Sun has a broad interest in the field of mechanics of materials. His group performs cross-disciplinary research to design materials and systems at the nano/micro-scale for unprecedented engineering performances. Recent research topics involve impact mechanics and energy conversion leveraging the nanofluidics in highly porous materials such as Metal-organic Frameworks (MOFs).
The group is seeking motivated PhD students with a background in mechanical engineering, material science, physics, chemistry, or in a closely related field. Candidates with interests in (but not limited to) one or more of the following areas are particularly encouraged to apply: 1) Material properties under high strain rate deformation; 2) Nanoporous materials, including MOFs, zeolites, and silica; 3) Nanofluidics and microfluidics; 4) Micromechanics and applications of nano-architected materials; 5) Energy absorption and protection against impact, vibration and blast; and 6) Vehicle safety and traffic accidents.
Prospective applicants should contact Dr Sun to discuss possible projects and funding opportunities via email (y.sun.9@bham.ac.uk). Please include a CV (with the contacts of two referees) and a brief letter of motivation, and use the subject line “Application for PhD Position”. Please also send over your IELTS/TOEFL and academic transcripts obtained on your undergraduate and/or master's degrees. Here is the entry requirement:
• Language: IELTS 6.0 with no less than 5.5 in any band; or TOEFL 80 overall with no less than 19 in Reading, 19 in Listening, 21 in Speaking and 19 in Writing.
• Undergraduate and/or master grades: Usually 80% or above (equivalent to a UK Bachelor Honours degree, Second Class Upper Division or higher).
The group also welcomes applications for visiting students and scholars. Please feel free to get in touch. More details of Dr Sun can be found at Birmingham Research Portal or Linkedin.
