phd studentship/visiting scholar: intelligent biosensing systems for healthcare

university of southampton, uk

qualification type:        phd
location:        southampton, uk
funding for:   international students (You should have published at least 1-2 first-authored papers to applying for this sholarship)

supervisory team: dr chengchen zhang, prof hywel morgan

project description

are you passionate about advancing healthcare through cutting-edge technology? do you have a keen interest in biosensors, artificial intelligence, and their applications in healthcare? we invite you to embark on an exciting research journey with us as we seek a talented and driven phd student to join our team in the pursuit of intelligent biosensing systems for healthcare.this research project aims to develop advanced technologies and systems that integrate biological sensors, data analytics, and artificial intelligence to monitor, diagnose, and manage health conditions and diseases. these systems are designed to provide real-time, accurate, and personalised information about a person's health status, allowing for timely interventions and better healthcare decision-making.

about us:

the centre for hybrid biodevices (chb) within the digital health and biomedical engineering (dhbe) group is a world-class facility housing both level 1 and level 2 biocontainment laboratories, offering a cutting-edge research environment. this centre is dedicated to the secure evaluation of biodevices and the advancement of methods for miniaturising analytical equipment, ultimately enabling automated, cost-effective, and more efficient sample analysis and biomarker detection. furthermore, our close collaborations with the university hospital southampton provide students and researchers with the unique opportunity to engage with actual biological patient samples, pathogens, and cell cultures, ensuring a practical and real-world research experience.

about dr chengchen zhang (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/pe ... r-chengchen-zhang):

dr chengchen zhang is currently a lecturer (assistant professor) in the digital health & biomedical engineering group (dhbe), which is a part of the school of electronics and computer science (ecs) at the university of southampton, uk. dr zhang was the winner of the newton international fellowship from the royal society, uk.

before joining southampton, dr zhang finished her phd and postdoc training at the university of new south wales (unsw), australia, under the supervision of prof. kourosh kalantar-zadeh and prof. ewa goldys, respectively. her work was focused on 1) investigating the unique physical and chemical properties of liquid metals based nanomaterials for health monitoring and therapeutics, and 2) developing highly sensitive point-of-care (poct) diagnostic platforms for rapid disease diagnosis. dr zhang has published over 20 peer-reviewed articles in highly prestigious journals including acs nano, advanced functional materials, small, chemistry of materials, acs applied materials interfaces, and applied materials today. her works have been cited ~700 times (h index = 15, based on the source of google scholar.)

dr. zhang's research group aims to tackle the challenges in health monitoring and therapeutics by harnessing the unique properties of nanomaterials and the power of artificial intelligence (ai).  at present, she is supervising/co-supervising 3 phd students and 1 undergraduate student.

fields of expertise:
1. exploring the distinctive physical and chemical attributes of liquid metal-based nanomaterials for disease therapy and health monitoring.
2. creating highly sensitive point-of-care diagnostic devices for swift and accurate disease diagnosis.
3. formulating polymeric drug delivery systems for precise control and sustained release of therapeutic agents.

about prof hywel morgan (https://www.southampton.ac.uk/pe ... ssor-hywel-morgan):
hywel morgan is professor of bioelectronics in the school of electronics and computer science (ecs) having moved from the university of glasgow in 2003. from 2016 to 2022 he was deputy head of school research, responsible for the ref 2020 submission, and he also led the development of the school’s biomedical engineering undergraduate degree programme.

his research interests are in microfluidics, bio-sensors and lab-on-a-chip technologies. in 2001 he was awarded a royal society-leverhulme senior research fellowship at the university of oxford, and in 2004 won the desty memorial prize for innovation in separation science. from 2013 to 2017 he was a royal society industry fellow with sharp labs.   he is co-founder and director of verso biosense, developing implantable vital signs sensors, and ifast diagnostics commercialising rapid antimicrobial resistance tests.  he is a scientific advisor to several companies including nuclera nucleics. he has published nearly 300 journal papers, and is editor of microfluidics and nanofluidics. from 2015 to 2020 he held a royal society wolfson research merit award. he is a fellow of the institute of physics, the royal society of chemistry, and the iet. in 2019 he was elected a fellow of the learned society of wales, and in 2020 he was awarded an mbe for services to biomedical engineering.
